Artist's Comments
When my father recently celebrated his very important 90th birthday, I wanted to present him with something special.
He had a rough childhood. His mother and father divorced when he was about 5 years old and his father left, not to be seen again until I was about 13 years of age. His young mother left him with her parents to travel around with a man who later became her second husband. He wouldn't see her again, until HE was 13 years old.
My father's best memories are those when he was being raised by his grandparents. Many of those memories surrounded the family dog (his childhood dog), a Boston Terrier named Buck. We heard stories of Buck, from my father, as I and my 4 siblings were growing up. I possess a couple of old faded family photos, showing my young pop, buck and my paternal great grandfather and grandmother. Armed with these photo and other Boston Terrier research, I decided to paint this portrait of Buck and present it to my dad as his birthday present. He loved it!
