This piece was created for a specific competition sponsored by two local nonprofit organizations, Sierra Art Trails (a group that organizes our annual artist open studio tour) and Yosemite Audubon (our closest chapter of the Audubon Society), "AVIAN: Bird in a Changing World." Ravens are all around us up here. They're open to communicating with humans and whenever you approach a tree, telephone pole or other roost they're inhabiting, they caw loudly at you. They even speak when they pass you closely overhead. Of what they're trying to tell me, I have no idea, but they communicate none the less. When you view their deep black coats up close, you realize they're actually a rainbow of deep colors, kind of like an iridescent oil spot in a parking lot on a rainy day. I'm told they're quite the collectors, especially of colorful or shiny things and that's how I arrived at my painting concept. The more litter in the environment for them to pick up, the more trash will contribute to structure of future nests.
